Lotusphere Comes To You ‘10 (UK)
Fri, Mar 5th 2010 3:24a   Darren Adams
It’s that time of year again – registration for the UK-based Lotusphere Comes To You events is now open. There are three events this year – London (13th April), Edinburgh (15th April) and Warrington (13th May), the latter being run by our excellent Business Partner Polymorph. One great attraction this year is the fact that I won’t be speaking (for the first time in many years) so you won’t have to listen to me… instead you will have the pleasure of hearing fro [read] Keywords: collaboration ibm lotus lotusphere facebook twitter

R.I.P. Internet Explorer 6
Mon, Mar 1st 2010 1:23p   Darren Adams
My frolleague Richard ‘Dickie’ Voaden (who I bumped into in Sweden last week) forwarded a link today, reminding me that the Grim Reaper of software will soon be coming to collect Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 and take it to the underworld (and it’ll have Netscape Navigator to keep it company). My reply  to Dickie was something along the lines of “good, and they can do us all a favour and bury Internet Explorer 7 and 8, and plans for any future versions, at the same time& [read] Keywords: applications facebook firefox google linux mac microsoft twitter virus

Lotus Notes integrating with Tungle
Wed, Feb 17th 2010 10:24a   Darren Adams
Imagine wanting to arrange a meeting with someone and being able to see whether they’re free or not… how great would that be? Well, most modern e-mail solutions (such as Notes / Domino and that one that Microsoft sell) offer such a thing – it’s called ‘free time search’. Unfortunately, many people are either too lazy to use free time search, or maybe just don’t know how – I say this because most of the meeting invites I get are for times that IR [read] Keywords: domino ibm lotus lotusphere notes facebook microsoft twitter

Annual moan about The Brit Awards, 2010 edition
Sun, Feb 14th 2010 7:24a   Darren Adams
The awards ceremony takes place this coming Tuesday – I don’t care who wins and who loses because the whole thing is a nonsense. Let’s start with best album of 2009 – Dizzee Rascal is nominated. Is that his real name? “Congratulations Mr Rascal, it’s a boy” – “great, I’ll call him Dizzee… a brother for my eldest son Dirty”. Anyway, who else? Florence & the Machine, Kasabian, Lily Allen and Paolo Nutini. Young Mr Nutini, [read] Keywords: facebook twitter

A week with Symphony 3 (the beta)
Fri, Feb 12th 2010 3:24p   Darren Adams
I’m a little behind Ed Brill, but I’ve been busy ticking off the journeys listed on TripIt. Last week at EdgeGuide’s post-Lotusphere event in Stockholm (over one hundred delegates, well done guys) I spoke about Symphony 3, and within ten minutes of coming off the stage (to rapturous applause of course) I discovered that the beta of Symphony 3 was already available. Twenty minutes later it was downloaded and installed, and since then I’ve installed the Mac version. So, it’s basically a big iPod touch
Thu, Jan 28th 2010 3:31p   Darren Adams
Yesterday I blogged about the fact that the whole world had convinced itself that Apple were going to announcement a tablet device. And unless you live in a cave or are appearing in a reality television show where you get locked in a house for forty days, you’ll probably now know that Apple did just that. In a rather puny attempt to set myself up as an observer of future technology trends, I speculated that early adopters would probably wish they’d waited for the next iteration. File Navigator for Lotus Notes
Wed, Jan 27th 2010 11:06a   Darren Adams
Here’s a very handy Notes side-bar plug-in which has been knocking around since the middle of 2009 but has really come into it’s own with the latest release. The File Navigator plug-in does what it’s name suggests… it allows you to access your file system from the Notes side-bar, perform a set of actions on the files and folders, and drag and drop files to and from Notes documents and e-mails (not that I’m condoning sending file attachments in e-mails of course R [read] Keywords: lotus notes facebook network openntf twitter widget

The difference between men and women
Wed, Jan 27th 2010 11:06a   Darren Adams
On Christmas Eve I announced via Twitter the sad passing of Mrs A’s laptop. I was on the phone and from behind me I could hear the unmistakable sound of a hard disk in the throes of death. By the time the conference call had finished, the Windows desktop had disappeared and had been replaced by a black screen with the words ‘disk error’ (or something to that effect). Attempts to bring the old beast back to life failed. And it was an old beast – a single core processor of [read] Keywords: desktop facebook laptop macbook twitter

The perfect Christmas gift?
Wed, Jan 27th 2010 11:06a   Darren Adams
There’s good spam and there’s bad spam… bad spam offers me a dangerous array of dubious prescription drugs and the chance to receive money from some extremely generous Nigerian bankers. Good spam is harmless but unwanted… and sometimes it’s received because at some point in the past I purchased something or maybe even submitted my own e-mail address. BlackBerry Storm 2
Wed, Jan 27th 2010 11:06a   Darren Adams
Back in October 2008 I blogged about the BlackBerry Storm, RIM’s first touch-screen device. At the time I was totally seduced by the idea of having a full-screen BlackBerry… until I tried it. The usability of the original Storm was deservedly much-maligned, and indeed I spent ten unsuccessful minutes trying to enter my name into the contact list, eventually resulting in the word ‘Dappem’. No, I’m not joking. The design of the device was lovely, the big screen was br [read] Keywords: applications blackberry facebook iphone rim twitter

Ice age
Wed, Jan 27th 2010 11:06a   Darren Adams
Here at Adams Tower we love Christmas, and every year I have to persuade Mrs A to hold back on playing the Christmas music until a reasonable date. 1st November is too early, even though the Harrods Christmas department opens in August. As we get to late November, and the sound of Bing Crosby’s crooning and whistling wafts out from the iPod speakers, I consider how ridiculous the lyrics of White Christmas are… for traditionally Christmas in the South East of England is a rather grey [read] Keywords: atlantic facebook ipod office twitter

A new addition to the family

It was actually quite scary how quickly this happened – a few weeks ago Mrs A finally agreed with Lolli that we would get a new dog, but plan it to coincide with the start of school holidays. The pair of them then started looking at where they would get the right dog from… the ‘right dog’ being a Yorkipoo, a Yorkshire Terrier / Poodle cross. It must be nice to work for Apple, knowing that the slightest rumour of Steve Jobs breaking wind will generate a billion news articles. Apple have trained the industry well, and now we’re all waiting for their announcement events knowing that that something desirable will be unleashed upon a waiting world. ‘The View from Forrester Research’ hosted on ZDNet has some very positive things to say about the forthcoming 8.5 release of Lotus Sametime. The new release has a host of new capabilities – iPhone support, improved video, new web APIs, an updated rich client and a new zero-download web client – but the big improvements are in the web conferencing capabilities. Exchange 2010 – the tables are turned
Mon, Dec 14th 2009 10:56a   Darren Adams
Like most people of the Lotus persuasion, I remember the days when advocates of Microsoft Exchange were very fond of stating that Domino was very wasteful of disk space because of it’s architecture – everyone has their own mail box and each e-mail (and it’s attachments) would be stored separately per mail box. So if I e-mailed 20 mb of file attachments to 10 users I’d be creating 200 mb of allotted disk space on the server(s). This hit the Twittersphere yesterday and was also blogged about by Stuart McIntyre on his LotusLive blog… the combined services of LotusLive have now attracted 18 million paying subscribers. The Turner Prize 2009
Tue, Dec 8th 2009 4:55p   Darren Adams
I must say, I found the Turner Prize very disappointing this year. In previous years it’s been all-to-easy to poke fun at the preposterous and pretentious rubbish that these so-called artists pride themselves on… people dressed as bears, flashing lights, planks of wood on the floor, mannequins on toilets and old sheds. I have just one thought about this kerfuffle over British hacker Gary McKinnon finding his way into some (supposedly) ultra-secure US Government systems… don’t put the guy in jail. Instead the US Government should fly him over the pond first class and grill him on how he did it. That way they can learn about how to make the systems more secure. Before I start talking about Lotusphere 2010 I just wanted to mention that today is the 18th anniversary of me joining what was, at the time, Lotus Development Corporation. I know what you’re thinking, I must have gone straight from junior school. Have you ever wondered about how much rain runs off your roof, into the gutter and down the pipe? Your answer is probably “no”. I don’t spend my days considering it either. But heavy downpours used to worry me – the guttering at the front of our house didn’t seem to be able to cope well with torrential rain and the result was that a small area near our front door used to fill up. Wed, Aug 26th 2009 3:56p   Darren Adams
Travelling from Heathrow to Copenhagen on the world’s favourite airline allowed me to pick up a copy of the Daily Mail, a newspaper well-known for it’s traditional values. I guess it depends which historical figures you judge to be traditional… Adolf Hitler maybe? Anyway, there was an amazing picture of a 25 foot great white shark on page 3, and while coming into land I had to turn off the Archos and my eye caught a reader’s letter. Wednesday night in Lyngby
Wed, Aug 26th 2009 2:55p   Darren Adams
I’ve noticed something strange. Opposite my hotel there’s a cinema surrounded by several cafes and restaurants, and last night the area was a hive of activity… loads of people in the cinema queue and waiting to be seated at the various eating establishments. Tonight, it’s like a ghost town. Possible explanations… Tuesday is two-for-one night at the cinema… FC Copenhagen are playing a Champions’ League qualifier and the good people of the Copenhagen subur [read] Keywords:

Denmark
Tue, Aug 25th 2009 4:56p   Darren Adams
Good evening everyone. I am in Denmark, which is enormously exciting as I’ve never been to Denmark before. I’ve been telling everyone I was going to Copenhagen, which was true in a way – I landed at Copenhagen airport, passed through Copenhagen on the train, but eventually got off at Lyngby (which I think is pronounced Lungbu). So you’ve probably guessed I’m not on holiday – Lyngby is the location of IBM’s main office in Denmark. Some observations: Out [read] Keywords: ibm google office

Butler Group talks Lotus Connections
Tue, Aug 25th 2009 7:01a   Darren Adams
Butler Group have published an in-depth report on IBM Lotus Connections. One important thing to note is that the report was based on Connections 2.0.1 so some of the comments are not up-to-date – for example, the lack of a wiki capability is cited as a weakness. With Connections 2.5 (shipping end of this week) that weakness is removed, and I’ll stand by my previous post and again say that the new version puts us even further ahead of the competition. The report says good things about [read] Keywords: collaboration connections ibm lotus enterprise integration microsoft sharepoint wiki

This is going to be a rubbish blog post, because on the way into the studio I had to sign a confidentiality agreement. I’d already left the camera at home having been told it would be confiscated, but I had planned a little report about a visit to the set of a major movie which is currently being filmed. However, part of the agreement was not to divulge any details via Twitter, Facebook or blogging. Collaborating with the outside world

In September, the Lotus team in Sweden will be holding their Gold Club event – a meeting (with dinner thrown in) for their most valued customers. Our Swedish country manager Kristoffer invited me (in my new capacity) to come over and talk to the assembled audience about how Lotus solutions were helping customers to reduce costs and improve efficiency. “No problem” I said – Sweden is a nice place to visit and there’s nothing I like more than hearing my own voice talk [read] Keywords: connections ibm lotus lotusphere notes network

Fun with Exchange upgrades
Fri, Aug 14th 2009 3:56p   Darren Adams
This article on ZDNet makes an interesting read on the pros and cons of Exchange 2010. Bear in mind that upgrades to an e-mail infrastructure are never trivial – they require planning, execution, resources and funds, and sometimes carry a small amount of risk when moving from a mature stable version to a newer version. Although I show a slide with successive versions of Domino and the word ‘upgrade’ plastered all over it, I recognise it’s often a major undertaking for com [read] Keywords: collaboration domino ibm notes applications enterprise exchange exchange microsoft outlook server vista

The end of the line for Microsoft Word?
Thu, Aug 13th 2009 4:55a   Darren Adams
The Internet is a wonderful place to spend some time, but it has it’s bad points. Firstly there’s the criminal element – hackers, virus writers, spy and malware, and people making kind offers to deposit Nigerian fortunes in your bank account. And then there’s the problem of whether the truth is out there, and how do you work out what’s true and what’s not… for example, is Lady GaGa really a hermaphrodite as was speculated this week? I don’t want to turn this into the fox blog, but I wanted to share this with you. I think it’s wonderful to see foxes in the garden – Mrs A is not so sure – and it’s even better to see three youngsters as I did this morning. A visitor in the garden
Thu, Aug 6th 2009 5:52p   Darren Adams
Since we moved to Adams Tower here in the wilds of Camberley three years ago, foxes have been a familiar sight (especially since our dear old spaniel Molly passed away). This year I’ve seen a pair together only once, but have seen more individual visitors at the front of the house… which isn’t surprising since that’s where I sometimes leave food out for them. New music from Incubus

To be honest I’m not a big fan of ‘greatest hits’ albums. In this day and age when you can download whatever set of tracks you like, and therefore effectively make up your own compilation, the idea of greatest hits is rather redundant. If you’ve already bought the albums of the band in question then a greatest hits album is almost completely redundant, apart from the one or two tracks that they add.
